When it comes to movies, people with disabilities are rarely seen. However, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 40 million Americans have a disability, representing almost 13% of the population. So when disabled individuals make up just 2.5% of characters in 2017’s top 100 films, there seems to be a big disparity. However, when Hollywood does decide to make a film featuring someone with a disability, they often put their heart into it and create an amazing film. Here are five of our favorites.

How a Ban on Plastic Straws Hurts the Disabled

Earlier this month, Starbucks and American Airlines became the first two major companies to announce that they were phasing out plastic straws, and Seattle became the first U.S. city to ban them from food service establishments. While there’s no doubt that eliminating the use of plastic straws does offer environmental and health benefits, it also poses new challenges to people with disabilities, some of whom require a straw just to take a drink.
