If you have a disability and you depend financially upon your disability benefits, it's understandable to want to make sure that you know when you'll be receiving those benefits each month. Let's take a closer look together at how the Social Security Administration determines when it will pay benefits to eligible recipients.
What Types of Disability Benefits Are Paid Monthly?
If you are already receiving disability benefits from the Social Security Administration, you may already know that two types of benefits may be available, depending upon the recipient's circumstances. These benefits include Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.
While these benefits have certain differences, to receive either type of benefit, an individual must have a qualifying medical disability that has rendered them disabled for at least one continuous calendar year or more.
To qualify for SSDI benefits, an individual must be “insured.” This means they worked a job for a sufficient amount of time through which they regularly paid part of their salary into the Social Security system. To receive SSI benefits, on the other hand, an individual does not need to be "insured." Instead, they must have income and resources below a specific limit established by the Social Security Administration.
Another difference between the two types of benefits are the dates upon which they are paid. Let’s look more closely at the Social Security Administration’s typical payment schedule.
When Is Each Type of Benefit Typically Paid?
For individuals who receive SSI payments, those payments are generally made on the first of the month. SSDI payments, however, are typically made based on birthdate. As a general rule, SSDI payments are made as follows:
- If the beneficiary’s birthday occurs on the 1st through the 10th of the month, the SSDI check or direct deposit will arrive on the second Wednesday of each month.
- If the beneficiary’s birthday occurs on the 11th through the 20th of the month, the SSDI check or direct deposit will arrive on the third Wednesday of each month.
- If the beneficiary’s birthday falls on the 21st through the 31st of the month, the SSDI check or direct deposit will arrive on the fourth Wednesday of each month.
While these are the general rules, there are certain exceptions. One exception applies to individuals born before 1997. For those individuals, SSDI payments usually arrive on the third of the month. Another exception exists for individuals who receive benefits based on a spouse or parent's work record. In those situations, benefits are paid based on the spouse or parent's birthdate.
Sometimes, these dates can change if the scheduled payment date falls on a weekend or a holiday. In those cases, the payment will typically be made on the Friday preceding the regularly scheduled date. Occasionally, this may result in an individual receiving two monthly payments. For example, in November of 2024, SSI recipients will receive their November payment on November 1st. However, since December 1, 2024, falls on a Sunday, the SSI payment intended for December 1st will be paid on Friday, November 29th instead.
How Much Will You Receive?
In addition to wondering when benefits are paid, potential recipients also often wonder how much they might receive. This is an understandable question to ask.
It's important to remember that, as a general rule, payment amounts are not based on a particular condition, with few exceptions, like blindness. In most cases, however, benefit amounts are determined through calculations based on various factors. Factors include work and earning history, income, and resource level, among others.
For both SSDI and SSI benefits, there are maximum monthly amounts that can be received. These may change from year to year, depending on various economic factors. In 2024, the maximum monthly SSDI payment that an individual can receive is $3,822. The maximum SSI payment each month is $943 for an individual and $1,415 for a couple.
