What Is Supplemental Security Income?

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is compensation in the form of cash benefits to senior citizens who are 65 or older, to those who are blind or have another disability and who do not have much property or income from another source. SSI is similar to SSD in that the standard to receive the benefits are the same. However, financial requirements must also be met to get SSI. SSI kicks in for the disabled when they do not qualify for SSD or the amount of SSD they will receive puts them below the financial standard. The basic SSI amount is the same nationwide. However, many states add money to the basic benefit. Call Disability Experts of Florida or fill out the form to the right to find out more about your potential benefits. We are here to help.

SSI Facts – Supplemental Security Income

Social Security does not count all of your income when they decide whether you qualify for SSI. For example, they do not count:

  • The first $20 a month of most income you receive;
  • The first $65 a month you earn from working and half the amount over $65;
  • Food stamps;
  • Shelter you get from private nonprofit organizations
  • Most home energy assistance.

Social Security does not count everything you own in deciding whether you have too many resources to qualify for SSI. For example, they do not count:

  • The home you live in and the land it is on;
  • The cash surrender value of life insurance policies with a face value of $1,500 or less;
  • One vehicle
  • Burial plots for you and members of your immediate family
  • Up to $1,500 in burial funds for you and up to $1,500 in burial funds for your spouse.
