It can be Difficult to Qualify

A ruptured disc (also called a bulging disc, herniated disc or prolapsed disc) occurs when a disc has been displaced from its normal position between two vertebrae. This can cause extreme pain in the back and other areas of the body, and can cause muscle weakness, numbness or tingling sensations, and loss of reflexes.

Common treatments for a ruptured disc include physical therapy, pain medications, steroids, epidural injections and surgery. To be eligible for disability benefits for a ruptured disc, your injury must last at least 12 months, or be expected to persist for at least 12 months. Also, your injury must leave you unable to work.

Often, ruptured discs can heal within 12 months or with surgery, making a claim for disability benefits for a ruptured disc more difficult. However, sometimes this type of injury can leave you unable to do the job you did before. This can leave someone with a ruptured disc unable to work, which will make them more likely to receive disability benefits.

You may Require Additional Conditions

A ruptured disc can lead to additional problems like narrowing of the spine (stenosis), pressure on spinal nerves (nerve root compression) or inflammation of a membrane that surrounds the spinal chord (arachnoiditis). The SSA is more likely to grant disability benefits for a ruptured disc if one the above conditions is also present. You may also need to prove that your condition has affected you in other ways like limiting your range of motion, decreasing your reflexes or sensation, or causing muscle weakness.
