The recent passing of Memorial Day 2012 turned our attention to our Veterans and our thanks to them for their service. If you are getting Veteran's Benefits, it does not exclude you from getting Social Security Benefits (SSDI). Though many folks labor under this misconception, it is not true. This is because both the Department of Veterans' Affairs and the Social Security Administration (SSA) each have two different types of disability benefits:- A program which evaluates a veteran's income and other resources.
- A disability benefit program, which doesn't.

The critical point to remember here is that Social Security benefits are based on work history and the Social Security taxes that you have paid over your working life. Veteran's benefits are distinctly different from Social Security benefits. Therefore, veterans are eligible to receive both. However, there are a few things to know about the two different types of benefits. Veterans may receive both Service Connected and Compensation benefits and SSDI benefits simultaneously, as neither benefit is based on other income.
But What about Supplemental Security Income and Non-Service Connected Benefits?
A veteran may get Non-Service-Connected/Pension benefits and SSI because only if the total of VA benefit and other income is less than the SSI allowable amount (721.00 in 2014). SSI benefits are calculated by the amount of income and resources a veteran has, as opposed to his/her work history. Therefore, if you are a disabled veteran and have ample resources, the SSA would most likely evaluate your situation and deem you ineligible for SSI benefits.
Non-Service-Connected benefits are similar to SSI in that the payment amount is dependent on income and other related issues.
