Endocrine disorders used to be a part of the list of disabilities that were considered when applying for disability benefits. However, as of June 7, 2011, the Social Security administration took endocrine disorders from their list of disabilities. For the most part, however, people that suffer from endocrine disorders and cannot work may still be able to apply and possibly get disability benefits. The requirements they would have to meet would now be under another listing.
The changes in the way that the Social Security Administration now handles endocrine disorders means that the condition is listed under other body systems. For instance, if someone has diabetes, this can lead to peripheral neuropathy which affects the way that people are able to use their hands or legs. So in other words, that person would not qualify under diabetes mellitus but would instead fall under the category of peripheral neuropathy. Also, if the individual has diabetes and has a leg amputated or becomes blind, they can be evaluated under those medical listings.
So to clarify, endocrine disorders can be classified under another medical listing. A leg amputation can fall in the category of musculoskeletal disorder, diabetic neuropathy may fall with the category of genitourinary medical listings and peripheral neuropathies can fall within neurological medical listings. The criteria also state that the condition must be severe enough that the person cannot work and the condition is expected to last over a year or result in death.
The reason the Social Security Administration redesigned its criteria for endocrine disorders is that medical science has come a long way in creating advanced technology so that detecting endocrine disorders at an early stage is now possible. In addition, there are newer treatments available so that the patient who is diagnosed with an endocrine disorder can better handle his/her condition.
